Campaigning Outside the Lines: A Formula for Exclusion
Lansing Scott
http://eatthestate.org/10-06/CampaigningOutsideLines.htm
Many people are aware that our electoral system is biased in favor of the two dominant parties and against smaller parties, but the campaign of Gentry Lange, this year's Green Party candidate for King County Executive, provides a useful case study of just how bad that bias really is.

King County Executive: The irony and tragedy of Ron Sims' political career is that he keeps running (and losing) races for higher office by posing as far more liberal than his performance as King County Executive would indicate. Now he wants a third term as Exec, and he's being challenged by David Irons, the same Eastside Robo-Republican that the Party designated a few years ago to take out environmentalist gadfly Brian Derdowski in a King County Council primary. It's a truly unappealing choice. Fortunately, there's a third option -- Gentry Lange, the Green Party candidate. Owing to the Green Party's dysfunction, Lange's campaign has been barely visible, which is a shame: he's smart, articulate, and a way better choice than Sims. Gentry Lange.

King 5 News

Gentry Lange, a third choice for King County Executive In the race for King County Executive, it's a full-fledged battle between Democrat Ron Sims and Republican David Irons. But on your ballot there's another choice - Green Party candidate Gentry Lange, who hasn't gotten much publicity yet.

Your Choice: Do We Need A New King County Executive?
"The real problem in government is that the 'left' blames the 'right' and the 'right' blames the 'left' and nobody proposes real solutions," says Green Party candidate Gentry Lange, who's number one issue is traffic congestion. "Both of these gentlemen have been in government for quite some time, and I don't see a history of traffic solutions," Lange accuses. He says solutions are simpler than they seem. "I think a lot of people are tired of the lack of enforcement of certain basic rules of the road," Lange says. "These types of things actually affect your traffic flow in a large way."

The Seattle Times

Of the voters, he asks, "Do they want someone who is an activist, who has a history of pointing out the problems in the system and breaking news at a local and national level, or should they trust two guys just blaming each other for problems and offering no solutions?"

[Corrections to this article include that Andy Stephenson ran as a Democrat, not a Green. Andy's campaign was successful in bringing the real voting issues to the table during that race, and Andy dropped out for personal reasons that had little to do with the campaign or his chances, so saying it was "unsuccessful" is spinning it in a way that I believe is misleading. While the article could have quoted Presidential Candidate David Cobb, several prominent voting activists, or even my current coworkers in regards to my campaign... instead it focuses several paragraphs on one half sentence from the "about" page on my website. Interesting choice really. So I have posted a correction, here, on my website regarding my time with Real Change as an "Intern" and not as a "Volunteer". ]

Battle for county's top job heats up
Lange doesn't think either of the front-runners is a great choice. He doesn't see himself as a spoiler for the Democrats, although his mail box is full of hate mail from them, he said. Would he feel badly if Sims loses? ``Not in the slightest,'' he said.

Green Party candidate wants to overhaul election process; Shoreline resident's first run for political office struggles to get attention from media
Gentry Lange, 30, of Shoreline, the only third-party candidate running for county executive, is pressing the issue of election reform in his campaign. He's representing the Green Party and so far has struggled to get noticed by the media.

He talks of corporate control of the county's elections process and how some processes related to absentee ballots have wrongly been outsourced and should return to the county.

He's a proponent of sustainable technology, such as solar and wind power and biodiesel fuel. Those technologies, he said, need an advocate. He is opposed to Initiative 912, the effort to repeal a 9.5-cent increase in the state's gas tax, but says he understands why it's on the ballot. He points to ``billion-dollar boondoggles'' and drivers still stuck in traffic.

So much for those 'slam-dunk' votes
A three-pronged "Save Sims" strategy seems to be at work: a) Emphasize the expanded social service spending in Sims' proposed 2006 county budget; b) Go negative, hitting at the bankruptcy filing of a business Irons once managed, and privately cheering as the press explores deep fissures in Irons' family; and c) Scare the wits out of any Democratic voter who thinks of defecting to Green Party candidate Gentry Lange.

Get to know the real candidates
It's time for another edition of Unimportant Questions for Candidates, an interview designed to put voters in touch with the everyday-people part of our city's politicians.... get to know the real Ron Sims, who's running for re-election as King County executive; Al Runte, who wants to unseat Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, and Gentry Lange, the Green Party candidate out to beat Sims.

Sims, Irons trade barbs in TV debate
Green Party candidate Gentry Lange, a Shoreline real-estate agent, also participated in the debate. All three candidates agreed on at least one thing: They oppose state Initiative 912, which would roll back the gas-tax increase. Irons and Lange also said Sims should fire Elections Director Dean Logan.

There's a Green in the race too, Gentry Lange. Given the tight race, liberals would be foolish to waste their votes on him and his trite anti-corporate rap. Vote Sims.

GOP hopes Sims vulnerable
Shoreline real-estate agent and Green Party member Gentry Lange isn't on the primary ballot, but will be on the general-election ballot in November. Lange, who managed the late Andy Stephenson's aborted campaign for secretary of state last year, wants King County to stop using Diebold's software to count votes because he believes it lacks adequate safeguards.

Minority Party Candidates Stuck In Registration Limbo
Washington State Secretary of State Sam Reed issued rules last month that place minority party candidates in a registration limbo. Unable to initiate their campaigns until a month after their Democrat and Republican competitors, minority party candidates are now required to jump through an additional hoop -- go through the formality of a nominating convention. One candidate's solution? Hold a nominating convention at Hempfest.

Groups push instant-runoff voting in Brattleboro
by the Associated Press

Instant runoff voting is used when there are more than two candidates running for office and none gets more than 50 percent of the vote. Voters are asked to rank candidates in order of preference. The candidate with the fewest votes as top choice is eliminated in the first round, and his or her votes go to the voter's second choice, a process that continues until some candidate has more than 50 percent of the total vote.
